Sallie Mae is a great place to balance work and life, but it's a challenge to get ahead.

Director (Former Employee)
Reston, VA

I worked at Sallie Mae

ProsGreat mission, providing access to education for students. Great building with full gym with basketball and tennis courts. Great work-life balance. The colleagues are genuinely friendly and helpful and almost everyone wants to get things done. Right now, with the stock price so low, any stock bonus will appreciate significantly.

ConsThere was a big cultural and pay difference between senior management and the rank and file. The internal IT organization was too set in their 'old' ways and unable to adapt quickly to changing marketplace demands. Additionally, the organization became too big and has lost focus for some of their core competencies.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to the employees. Don't forget from where you came and where you are going. Respect everyone.

Pros: The company used to be great. Benefits, stock options,… Cons: Now the company is sliding into a pit. The current moral level at the company is horrid. Due to layoffs Fridays at Sallie… Advice to Senior Management: Quit looking at the bottom line and not at your people. If your people are happy and on board, the bottom line will follow.… No, I would not recommend this company to a friend More
