I worked at Sallie Mae

Pros

Great mission, providing access to education for students. Great building with full gym with basketball and tennis courts. Great work-life balance. The colleagues are genuinely friendly and helpful and almost everyone wants to get things done. Right now, with the stock price so low, any stock bonus will appreciate significantly.

Cons

There was a big cultural and pay difference between senior management and the rank and file. The internal IT organization was too set in their 'old' ways and unable to adapt quickly to changing marketplace demands. Additionally, the organization became too big and has lost focus for some of their core competencies.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the employees. Don't forget from where you came and where you are going. Respect everyone.

I have been working at Sallie Mae

    Pros

Good child care benefit. Lots of work to be done. Not enough time to do it. There is always something to do, just never enough time to do it. There are lots of technologies in use at SLM, and for the most part, there is a wide variety of skills to learn.

    Cons

Horrible hours, and the company doesn't value their employees. Senior management is driving the company into the ground. Layoffs are happening left and right, and others are expected to fill in the slack. The company manages by reaction, and there is no communication between the business and IT areas. Even worse, the company treats their borrowers terribly, and does nothing to improve the overall customer experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Al Lord should be fired. He could care less about the employees.

Work life balance is good, but pay is not good.

I have been working at Sallie Mae

    Pros

There are some very bright people here to learn from and grow. The work like balance is strong with recognition that time with family is an important aspect of job satisfaction.

    Cons

The salary is not very competitive. The company is going through some difficult times so some departments have little job security. The future profitability of the federal guarantee loan business is also in question so that makes the long term attractiveness of working at the company questionable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To compensate their employees at a much closer rate to their market value. And to communicate with them about their performance and expectations.
