    Pros

Most professors appreciate your strengths and know how to best put them to use, especially if you are an experienced professional. Also understanding of your course work/committments.

    Cons

Compensation is not commensurate with experience.

  2. Helpful (1)

The work environment is extremely varied -- some very poorly managed, others very well managed.

    Pros

It's a large community with pockets of excellence.

    Cons

There's no accountability, allowing very abusive managers to go unchecked. The pay is poor, and there is limited to no opportunity for raises or advancement.

There's an established pattern -- individuals start work here, full of enthusiasm and ideas, and one by one, people learn to stay within certain boundaries. Innovation is beaten out of people. I've never seen anyone successfully work here without following this pattern. Survival requires flying low and below the radar.

    Advice to Management

Employees need an environment that encourages risk-taking, initiative and independent thought. Financial reward for excellent performance does motivate people to rise even higher, contribute more.
