Pros

A lot of opportunities to network with students and staff.

I worked at San Jose State full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Very nice people who are committed to the university and to their careers.

    Cons

Bureaucracy and politics reign supreme. The AVP of Admin & Finance runs roughshod over the entire organization and can do so because he has political cover from the president.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Man up and do your job! You can't always be liked by your employees; respect is the coin of the realm for leaders.

I have been working at San Jose State full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent salaries (for state work) good benefits, an improving HR team, a bright future. Most employees generally care and feel a sense of community, and many are highly motivated by a genuine passion for the mission.

    Cons

Like any typical state bureaucracy, there's lots of red tape, and a union environment where under-performers can hang on indefinitely
