I have been working at Sandia

Pros

Great people. Excellent engineering programs. Salaries comparable to private industry, with the added bonus of job security. Excellent extended education program.

Cons

Too many rigid rules, and management obsessed with school ranking and GPA. Lack of clear career development paths, akin to swimming laps in a pool of caramel.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Balance the safety requirements with productivity, don't obsess too much in either direction. Promote more minorities. Place more emphasis on making the research relevant to civilian markets as well as for defense purposes.

    I worked at Sandia

    Pros

A lot of smart folks working at Sandia. I was lucky to work with a great staff member who was very strong technically, and open to teaching me this technical info. There are a lot of opportunies, especially for technologist, once you get in at Sandia.

    Cons

Some folks tend to "milk" the system. Also, there are folks who get promoted since they've been at Sandia for a long time, and they don't deserve the position/title based on their technical contriubtions/abilities. These folks tend to whine a lot...as the saying goes, the squeaky wheel gets the oil.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't be afraid to have a backbone.
