I worked at Sanger Institute full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good work life balance, world leading research institute full of smart people and interesting projects, easy to obtain funding

    Cons

Poor compensation, no focus on career development, line managers often have zero management training and don't do any management, horrendous office politics, corporate services don't really function and have little influence as board of management are mainly scientists and only care about science and not operational side critical to making things happen, bureaucracy is heavy. Many people are employed and do actually do a lot. No performance measurement that is actually measured, not linked to pay. Pay is poor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change in culture/attitude, restructuring and cutting the dead weight, implement measurable performance indicators and reward performance, obligatory management training and give corporate services more power e.g. ability to penalise PIs who don't follow institutional policy.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
    Approves of CEO
