Pros

The two supervisors that were there during my internship at SRJC were very supportive and brought differing perspectives to the work. The campus is a very beautiful and relaxed environment to work in. Working in the health center with a psychiatrist is a great well-rounded opportunity to grow as a therapist. Because it's a community college, you often end up with a wider range of incomes, ages and GAFs than you'd expect.

Cons

There was a certain amount of drama among the interns that was somewhat addressed by the supervisors, but may have been left to fester for a bit too long.

    Pros

The support for this institution is unlike anything I have seen nationally towards 2 year colleges. This institution is as highly regarded in this community as any 4 year university.

    Cons

The bureacracy here is a nightmare - endemic throughout the California system. There is a strong sense of pecking order and entitlement among older employees. The California budget crisis makes for a lot of uncertainty.

    Advice to Management

You need to get people out of their silos and encourage campus-wide dialogue. There is not a sense of togetherness on this campus amongst faculty.

    Pros

There is so much potential to make a difference and be a part of a positive community,. Santa Rosa Community College has great possibility to be a wonderful resource for the student population as well as the community.

    Cons

When you are "in" your are a part of a team and when you are part of the"in" you are definitely not feeling party to the obvious difference as the "out". The facility is wrought with possiblity but try to get a decent shot at a job w/out the inside connection. Do not step in the ring unless you are tight with someone who can protect you from the inevitable nics and scratches you will receive as the newbie. There are so many pockets being padded here, fluff and waste particularly in the tenured staff and faculty, the who is sleeping with who crowd. It is a hideous waste of resources. Once you are"in" who is gonna touch you, it is a carpet ride to the end. Sad no real evaluations are done w/ re: to either the faculty or the staff.

    Advice to Management

Prune the dead limbs... stop restricting the employment possibilities and allow some fresh ideas and new people to put their mark on this nearly defunct old horse.
