Some good, some bad; adds up to so-so

I have been working at Scholastic full-time (more than 8 years)

Pros

Benefits are very good. A health-care clinic and a small gym on the premises are nice perks, as is the lovely roof-deck "Greenhouse" cafeteria. Most of the people who actually produce the educational materials really care about what they do and the kids they're doing it for.

Cons

Communication is extremely poor. One hand doesn't seem to know what the other is doing. Reviews, if done at all, are via an online program rather than face to face. Morale is low, because positive feedback is rare while negative feedback is commonplace.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give more support (in time, materials, budget, positive feedback, training) to the people who actually produce your materials, and less to the middle managers just looking to perpetuate their own bonuses and perks.

I worked at Scholastic as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Fantastic coworkers who are highly passionate and devoted to creating the best possible products. Awesome benefits, a cafeteria that makes you never want to leave, and a true open-door policy within departments.

    Cons

There is a good chance, in the words of HR during my exit interview, "Sometimes, people just won't tell you if they don't like how you're working until they decide to fire you." That should say it all.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be honest with subordinates about job performance.

Good mission, but stuck in the past

I worked at Scholastic full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Casual, fun environment, friendly people, 35 hours a week, in house cafe & roof deck. It is a great place to have a nice work / life balance. Few people take any work home.

    Cons

Clueless senior management with no vision for digital strategy, Structure stuck in the past, Glacial pace of change, Uninformed employees. Almost no room for growth and no professional development. Low pay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop letting people work the same job for 20 years, hire better staff, hire top-notch digital strategy and branding thought leader. Could be a great media company, but there'd have to be a major shakeup with new hires, and ousting of complacent staff.
