Great Experience, lack of Growth

I have been working at Scholastic full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Family oriented, often people bring there children to work. There is an indoor greenhouse and the Scholastic Store often throws birthday parties. Everyone is friendly to one another for the most part and there are many employees who have been there for a very long time.

There is a lot of experience to gain, especially for one in the IT division. The eScholastic division in particular works with a wide range of new technologies to develop interactive sites, games, and mobile apps.

Cons

As with many big companies, there isn't much growth. They seldom promote and bring in consultants with big salaries that you will then have to train. If you are going to come in as FT, you have to make sure you demand a high salary upfront. The only true way to get a raise is to quit unfortunately.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest a little more in your staff. High retention rates only reduce company morale, and decrease the amount of company-wide knowledge retained. Also realize that this is a collaborative environment and that working together and being aware of each others projects will in the end go a long way.

I have been working at Scholastic full-time

    Pros

Many of the people that work here are extremely nice. It feels good to work at a company that promotes children's literacy.

    Cons

There are more than the normal share of people who are downright nasty. People that have been at the company for a long time feel entitled to treat newcomers badly. Competition between departments, even at the expense of the overall company, is encouraged. Politics are incredibly high considering the noble purpose of the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize the people who can stir things up in a positive way and not keep the status quo - doing business as usual will kill this iconic company. Spend money on the right things -- there is very little due diligence done on return on investment - many projects happen regardless of their value to the overall organization.
