Your work experience is different each day. It is dependent upon the classes you teach and the school's organization.

Current Employee - Per Diem Substitute Teacher in Philadelphia, PA
Current Employee - Per Diem Substitute Teacher in Philadelphia, PA

I have been working at School District of Philadelphia full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Teaching can be a very profound and meaningful experience. Most teachers are helpful and wonderful people to work with and to get to know. Working per diem gives you a bit of freedom to have a day off when you need it.

Cons

Finding parking at the different locations can be difficult and troublesome. Not every school provides you with lesson plans. Not every school is helpful when you have a disruptive child who needs to be removed.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Check in on substitute teachers during the day. Make sure they actually have all of the materials needed so that they can best do their job. Provide guest teachers with a lounge area for lunching.

Okay if you don't mind two gross salaries and bringing home less than 10% of what the district claims to the government.

I have been working at School District of Philadelphia full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

You work with high-risk students and can find ways to reach them.

    Cons

Too many - "salary", employees are unlikely to have union representation much longer, $350 million + deficit being paid for from teacher salaries, district supports many anti-teacher sentiments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Teachers did not create your deficit - your lack of accountability on spending did. Don't forget you would not be where you are today if it was not for a teacher. If you continue to hold teachers responsible for your irresponsibility, you only harm your students

Great job if you have a high tolerance for incompetence

I have been working at School District of Philadelphia full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

pay, health benefits, retirement benefits, time off (can you say July and August!), job security. the feeling that you are making the world a better place, unionized (for many) work place.

    Cons

Incompetence from higher ups, bully school principals, misbehaving students can often wear you down. Your work day is basically chaotic every day. Micromanagement to the extreme. Creativity is squashed. Most principals simply want obedience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get better principals and train them! The people that I know who have left have left because of either bully and unsupportive school principals, or simply just tired of incompetence from the district higher ups. They didn't leave because of the kids. Many good people who have left would still be with the district had they had better principals.
