    Pros

    Schwan's can be a vey rewarding company. Both income and promotion potential is a big plus. There are many RSRs that are making over 70k a year, while the average makes approximately 30k. They have such a high turn-over at the RSR(T) level and recently the Territory Sales Leader level, that a person with good work ethic and who can provide results will surely stand out. They have a decent benefits package which includes 401(K) matching. The company is currently striving to increase the work/life balance, but attempts in the past for this have failed. There are Key Performance Indicators tied to every position and you will always know where you stand with performance. Typically the manager meets with you once a week to talk about your performance. If you are doing well, it's an easy conversation, but if you are falling short of plan, expect to get pushed around a bit. The morale of the depots depends soley on the TSL. There is a great amount of pressure from above. If the TSL can manage it and filter it down to the RSRs, then it can be an exciting place to be. Top performers in the company get rewarded nicely at an annual banquet. The company is located all over the lower 48 states, so a transfer to a location anywhere in the US is very realistic. Also, the products are very good and easy to sell. There are products that are exclusive to Schwans or at the least, is very difficult to find at the stores. Finally, the founding core values (Hard work, Enthusiasm, Integrity, Growth, and Helping One Another) capture the pride this company had. This company grew from one truck in Marshall to a fleet nationwide because of these core values.

    Cons

    Unforutnately, there are quite a few cons to working at Schwans. First, the hours are horrible. You can expect to work 12-14 hours a day, everyday, 5 days a week. That is from the RSRT level all the way up to the Territory Sales Leader level. Promotion to management does not reduce the hours. In fact, expect to work even more. The vision upper management has warrants applause, but the plans and the execution are where the company faults. It is a private company, and the upper management can be extremely greedy and this will affect your career and family life. It is a very tough sales environment. Working your tail off for 12-14 hours doesn't get you a "get out of jail for free" card. They are very-results oriented and not achieving your sales plan will land you in the unemployment office. Schwan's also has a "flavor of the day" mentality. The contests and incentives to sell more are not really well thought out and most are last minute. So last minute in fact, that some of the rules and handouts for customers come after the contest has started. And all of them have strings attached. The strings are not unrealistic, but nevertheless, it's a string. The fleet of vehicles are not the best quality, but it is a new fleet. Finally, the pay versus the hours worked can be very very low, especially at the RSR level. I have seen some RSRs with average performance making less than minimum wage. Even the breakdown for managers is not all that appealing when you factor in the hours. Average manager makes about $14 an hour, when you factor in the 14 hour work days. That number will drop if the manager works a 6th day, which is frequent. It is a very stressful position. Regional HR reps tend to work for the benefit of the regional management, rather than for the good of the company. They look at ways to reduce staff without paying a severance package, very unethical. In management, your job is threatened daily. "If you don't do this then you will be written up". You can expect to hear this on a daily basis over the most simple of tasks, such as training and last minute reports. To survive at Schwans, you must have a long term outlook and be willing to sacrifice your personal life.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    RSR turnover is the number one reason Schwan's is struggling. The company needs to figure out a business model that will financially allow the RSRs more time for their pesonal lives.

    Pros

    You can make great money if your given a good route in a good area. Most customers are super friendly and enjoy the food.

    Cons

    You work almost 12 hours everyday. If your not bringing in $1,100 a day in gross sales your not making hardly anything. They constantly change products and placing preorders isn't the easiest for the customer. They don't do any sort of advertising or marketing at least in WI but I've heard they do advertising in MN where they are based. In 2012 they layed off a bunch off employees.

    To many products being taken away and similar ones not added.
