Current Employee - General Manager in Westfield, MA

I have been working at Schwan's full-time for more than 5 years

Pros

I have worked for schwan's for 6 years and have made the most money I have ever made in my life. Yes I work about 11 hours a day monday thru friday. I have the weekends off with my family. I worked in retail before Schwan's and worked every weekend. I would trade working my tail off monday thru friday and having the weekends off any day. The benefits are outstanding.

Cons

Work hours during the week are long

I worked at Schwan's full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The depot manager and other drivers were genuine, supportive, and fun to be around.

    Training was above average.

    Cons

Arrive at the depot at 8:30 AM, leave at 9:00. Ten minute lunch and no breaks (honest). Get back to the depot at 9:00 PM. One hour of paperwork. Get home at 10:30 PM.

    Earn $115

    Seriously?

I worked at Schwan's full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    You have a job.
    You get an employee discount.
You meet alot of great people (customers).

    Cons

As a route salesperson, you report to work at 8am, get a kick in the tail to start your day called a "Power Huddle" to get your ego motivated, leave the depot and begin your route. You complete your route somewhere between 9 and 10pm, return to the depot, complete your paperwork and make a deposit which you drop off by the bank on your way home. You get home after 11pm, to find the wife and kids in bed asleep and a cold plate of leftovers waiting for you in the microwave for dinner because you do not have time to stop and eat during your route day. You repeat this 5 or 6 days a week in exchange for roughly $600/ week. There are always promotions and contests going on to earn bonuses, however there are also lots of exemptions to ensure a reason to deny payment of bonuses when they are earned, such as time window percentages and at location serviced percentaged or must sign up at least 3 qualifing new customers a day for 3 months to be eligible, etc.
As a depot manager, you work the same 14 hour days 6 days a week and your one day off the phone rings steady with issue after issue, conferance calls and world shattering issues that upper management constantly comes up with because of an acute lack of planning and foresight on thier part. As a manager for over 10 years, I tracked only my hours I put in at the office for the 2011 calendar year and was ashamed I only earned $4.50 a hour for sacrificing 90% of my awake time that would have been better invested in my family...and that is not including the time at home spent on the phone with employees, supervisors, mechanics, corporate, etc.
If you don't like spending time with your family....
If you want your spouse to seek attention from someone else...
If you don't like to have friends...
If you don't have any hobbies or interests...
If you enjoy always being told you need to do more, no matter how above and beyond the set expectations you were given you achieved....
If you LOVE being lied to and having a carrot dangled in your face you will never get...
THEN this is the perfect job for you.
This company shamelessly takes advantage of employees who work hard and want to do a good job. Doing the best job here means you have ZERO chance of getting promotion or a raise because you have proven you are capable of working tirelessly to make them money for nothing. The favors they ask you to do today become part of your everyday work expectations immediately for no additional compensation. When merit reviews are performed, and you have been doing backward sommersaults through hoops of fire for the past year they point out that you should have also been juggling running chain saws. One moronic supervisor once told me what you did yesterday doesn't matter, what did you do today? Do I really need to save the company every day in order to valued and appreciated? Isn't that your job as a member of upper management?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

So many high wage earning, no results getting, couldn't effectively manage a lemonade stand much less a multi-billion dollar company individuals controlling the helm of this ship it is rediculous. Upper management is scared silly to promote anyone who works hard, is dedicated and has any knowledge capable of moving the company forward because they are fearful of putting qualified individuals in position to take thier jobs. I have had more intelligent conversations with the depot toilet than with the Southeast Region Vice President. When you put reports in his face showing true facts not opinions supporting an issue you are having and showing the blame to be on his team, he makes thin excuses and holds no one accountable. Seems when you screw up they are quick to want to nail you to the cross but let them show incompetence and you get an excuse and a song and dance to make light of the issue to CYA.
