I worked at Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc. full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Advancement opportunities as those above you burn out. Great benefits like tuition reimbursement (but only if applies to you CURRENT role), on-site gym, free parking, free on-site nurse, and ESOP.

    Cons

Crushing amount of overtime -- absolutely expected to work evenings and weekends at the office and from home. Overtime culturally expected and literally encouraged by CEO. Workload makes it impossible to catch up and meet all expectations. New hires leave within months or even weeks of hire. Others disappear from their cubicles ("resigned"), which means fired. Absolute environment of fear with no trust between management and employees in either direction.

Pay is low for the industry and if you're on salary, you can expect to work 60-70 hour weeks just to keep a week behind on projects. Don't expect to be raising kids or spending much family time.

Deadlines are not truthful. Work hard to meet one to find out that the actual deadline is weeks later or flexible, making it impossible to correctly plan work priority.

Employees are not allowed to transfer to field offices to be close to their families or to pursue educational goals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Great place to work survey results are worse every year for a reason. It gets worse every year.

Do not make routine overtime an expectation. Hire enough people to do the work and pay them enough. Offer them advancements and respect so that they will actually stay.

Do not fire people overnight and leave other employees wonder why. It builds an environment of fear and distrust.

Involve all employees in decision making at the group level.

Actually adhere to your stated values. Particularly dignity of work.

    Current Employee - Engineering Intern
    Current Employee - Engineering Intern

I have been working at Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc. as an intern (more than an year)

    Pros

SEL has a great name and products within the power industry. As an intern I always received very good compensation. There were always new things to learn and the engineers were encouraging for me to grow.

    Cons

Management's expectations are not always clear. The company grew at a very fast rate for a while, so now they seem to be on hold.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Utilize the talent this company employs and make sure expectations are known.
