Pros

Good people to work with, free gym membership, pretty good health benefits

Cons

Managers spend most of their time in meetings. No real career opportunities. Negotiate your salary well before you start, there is little opportunity to increase it later. HR and policies are antiquated for a software company. Executives are completely out of touch.

Advice to Management

Ask people what they think and respond. Clean house a little at the top.

I worked at SciQuest (more than a year)

    Pros

Beer Friday, Tickets to Durham Bulls/Hurricanes, relaxed dress code

    Cons

Turnover is high, mean/unprofessional coworkers around every corner, overwhelming pressure to meet unrealistic deadlines, no opportunity for career advancement.

    Advice to Management

Work on your management skills and most of your issues will resolve themselves. After all, people tend not to quit companies, they quit managers. For some reason, leadership finds it acceptable to have managers who are unapproachable, who attend meetings with arms crossed, and are two-faced. My direct manager spoke to me three times in nearly two years. Instead, he wanted me to go to a coworker for issues. Who does that??

By the way, if there aren't employment issues, why is the HR/Recruiting department so large?

    Pros

Free fancy coffee, free soda, free pinball, access to corporate hockey and baseball tickets. Big TVs in break room. Reasonable benefits: medical/dental, vacation, etc. Full of smart, dedicated people, trying to make a difference.

    Cons

Development methodology self-described as "Agile" is anything but. Velocity is not tracked or used in sprint planning. Constant overtime is expected, often unrecognized.

Communication within the development department is spotty and inconsistent. Communication between departments is almost nonexistent.

Team reorganizations within the development department take place with no input from people being moved around and with little regard to employee strengths and desires.

Career coaching is nonexistent. Individual performance goals are vague.

"Principles SciQuest Lives By" (see corporate website) do not represent the reality of how SciQuest operates -- inputs are measured, not coached, negative feedback is often dismissed out of hand, communication is poor, defining the problem is a small part of the process, it is not OK to call 'time out' unless you are high enough in the company hierarchy.

    Advice to Management

Seek honest input from line-level employees. Act on that input. Recognize that things need to change and communicate to the employees that management recognizes that need. Provide regular updates on status of attempts to improve.

Follow the "Principles SciQuest Lives By."
