Current Employee - ER SCRIBE in Fairfield, CA
Current Employee - ER SCRIBE in Fairfield, CA

I have been working at Scribe America part-time (less than a year)

Pros

Amazing premed experience. Will definitely put you ahead of the curve in med school and beyond.
- work alongside 1 physician each shift
- learn how to document medical decision making, Ddx, medical test ordering, interpretation, prescription writing, after care instructions, etc.
- witness all patient scenarios confronting healthcare workers
- work schedule is pretty flexible

Cons

You have to do this job for the experience and long term benefits - and definitely NOT for the money because they pay minimum wage. But in their defense my understanding is that the physicians pay for the scribes out of their own pocket, which explains why the salary is so low.

I have been working at Scribe America full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Learn medical terminology, ED culture, medications, watch procedures.

    Cons

No benefits even if you're full time, training quality extremely variable, and doctors can get away with treating you pretty much any way they want to.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care of your people. Not every hospital is near a medical school where you can just find someone new if you burn your scribes out.

I have been working at Scribe America

    Pros

-work side by side with physicians
-learn how to work well in a team oriented environment of an er
-night shift was wonderful for being a college student with a full day schedule
    -decent pay
-usually pretty flexible depending on your location

    Cons

    -no advancement
-no pay raises even though they said you would
-hours can be a pain (24/7)
-supervisor was inconsistant and had poor teamwork qualities
it all depends who the other scribes are at your location. my co-workers were lame so flexibility or changing a shift in an hurry due to emergencies was non-existant

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

stop trying to change things. the scribe as just a scribe is wonderful and is an idea that will continue to succeed if you don't mottle it up with other unnecessary ad-ons that could possibly cause trouble down the road
