Pros

Working for the best newspapers is like a family. It was like that at Scripps until local management changed.

Cons

The journalism industry is still dying. Working for any newspaper is not a good bet long term.

Advice to Management

Listen to the employees when they tell you something is wrong.

    Pros

To the extent you can get any newspaper job, it's a good day. The database editor in Washington is a real pro.

    Cons

The company cares about the Food Network and other cable TV shows, not the newspapers. They shut down the only one that was really top notch, The Rocky Mountain News.

    Advice to Management

Sell your newspapers to someone who cares about quality journalism if such a buyer exists.

    Pros

Knoxville is a great city to work and play. The benefits are good if you're willing to step up and go above and beyond what's required. Taking initiative and ownership is key to any job. There are a lot of very talented and smart people working at the local and corporate levels of Scripps which you can learn a lot from if you so desire.

    Cons

The fear is always there working with a newspaper company however I believe Scripps is on the right track and has good ideas to succeed in the declining print industry. Senior management has changed yearly since 2008 and each with their own ideas of how the company should move forward which can sometimes be a bit unsettling.

    Advice to Management

Communication is key in the workplace especially for a communications company. I think communication within the company has become better over the past year but could continue to be better from the top level down.
