Seagate Technology – “Seagate or Slavegate”

Pros

Seagate does offer regular performance and compensation reviews. Seagate is also a large company that can provide opportunities in several different areas and locations.

Cons

Seagate does not plan well and is quick to hire when times are good but does not plan for down times and therefore has frequent layoffs.

Seagate also tends to contract with H1B Visa personnel that then get converted to regular full time employees and causes Seagate to have to pay significant monthly legal fees. These positions can be easily filled with local persons that do not require such legal requirements. I found that once H1B Visa persons were more likely to hire other H1B Visas.

Advice to Senior Management

Consider eliminating so many H1B Visas as this can provide significant savings from legal fees.
Better long term planning can eliminate the constant roller coaster of hiring and layoffs which would provide considerable savings in severance packages.
