Pros

Great newspaper and getting better despite industry downturn. Interested in reporters' ideas, a lot of talented editors, kind and smart and funny coworkers.

Cons

More of the Seattle chill than some workplaces, and not all the editors are brilliant -- but most are, and most are kind. The biggest negative, of course, is what's happening to the newspaper industry.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Weed out the people who aren't excellent. You're good enough to attract the best and can't afford to hold onto the rest.

I worked at Seattle Times full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Seattle Times has an excellent work-life balance and great opportunities for career growth. Very friendly co-workers and work environment, a family-oriented culture. It's an exciting time as we re-invent ourselves in the news industry, and there are many opportunities for doing new and exciting things. Managers give you freedom to work on things that can make an impact and creativity is encouraged. From what I've experienced there's a very cooperative and non-hierarchical work environment.

    Cons

I can't think of anything negative

Suffers from too much consensus, can't get things done

I have been working at Seattle Times full-time

    Pros

Community mission is good. Lots of positive talented people work there. Great location. Excellent work / life balance. Can get some decent experience if you're in the right role and empowered. You can feel good about the work you're doing.

    Cons

Because everything is by consensus or decision making is misplaced (IT makes business decisions without consulting departments affected, sales so focused on making monthly goals and have final say in decisions that affect long term viability--which is at conflict, etc.) everything takes 10 times longer than it should. Everyone thinks they can do everyone else's job, so lots of second guessing decisions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value people's expertise--they could get paid well, but choose to work for the mission. So don't walk past the UX expert to get the editor to make UX decisions. Get ops involved in decisions that affect ops' work. Be sure to ask all business units for their needs in a project before launching the project. Set business goals for projects and base decisions on those. Get level of efforts on development work and build timelines on that, instead of pulling dates out of a hat.
