Depending on the site, it can be a decent job or it can be hell.

Pros

Can you pass a drug test, dress nice, and show up on time? Securitas will give you a job and usually plenty of overtime. $9 - $11 an hour with some benefits you pay largely yourself. Some of the jobs are great for students or retirees.

Cons

If you apply and demonstrate you can make it to a job site and want to work the hours, they just give you the job. Not all sites are like this, but some treat the job as just requiring warm bodies. Those warm bodies end up becoming supervisors after 2 - 6 weeks of job time. Might be a supervisor at a job site for several years and have officers brand new making as much or more than you per hour.

Easy jobs, but high turn around rate at most sites. No hiring standards. Does not even require a resume or job history. Takes employees word for being able to do a job even tho there are dozens of red flags in the interview and application process. I was coached on how to take the mouth swab drug test before being given it.

Sometimes you wonder how management even brothered to let these people start. Couple of examples, large number of people who get hired and then never show up the first day, people hired for a $7/hr position and they are riding a bus or driving over an hour one direction to reach the position, and older or disabled people who are hired for positions that requires extensive walking and standing.

Job site sometimes are not much better. They want you to be completely on top of the things with HIV: helpfulness, integrity, and vigilance. What they really should change it to is, person paid to open doors and be verbal scape goat for when anything goes wrong. Post orders are useless in most situations and tends to have a lot of double speak in it.

The office support side suffer the same poor quality standards. High on diversity, have employees that have been there for more than a year and still not able to do the basics of their job. A lot of them are berated and shown how to do stuff only once before being thrown into the full job.

Benefits are a joke. Individual plans expect to pay $300+/month for a healthy young individual for regular benefits. 401k is 10 cent matching on the dollar up to 3% of the your bi-weekly paycheck and requires two years service before you can collect their matching. Matching and pay rate are reset if you change sites(contract lost or you ask to move to another site).

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve your hiring standards and stop with the diversity. If the individual applying for the job has problems writing and speaking, it's a red flag. If the person applying has no resume and can't explain a job history, it's a red flag. If the person has a resume but all the jobs are short term(contract or non-contractual) jobs, its a red flag. If the person applying appears to be on drugs, it's a major red flag. If the person claims they can handle or will handle driving/riding somewhere that is way outside their place of resident, its a sure sign they do not fit the job.

The company training is sub par....
They are an "at will" employer. Meaning they can and will get rid people for no reason.
5 minute interview to get a job with... Come on. or for a promotion.
Will not uphold their stated values to employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Securitas overdseas is a decent company.. in the states.... wow the only thing going is big..

Listen to people. Put some thought and time into training. Make people want to stay with the company . Try to produce long term employees.

    Pros

Free uniforms, decent pay, but not great. Benefits available if you work full time. At times, you have a choice as to what type of work you could do. Training is frequent and usually top notch. Earned my CPR license again working there. Nice to know that the people working around you have some Life saving knowledge in case you need it.

    Cons

Very poor communication at my location between manager, supervisors and officers. This is especially true for the poor sap who gets the weekend graveyard shift.
Very little contact with your supervisor on weekend and graveyard shifts which has it's perks but can also be a negative. Do not expect any type of feedback of how you are doing your job, unless of course you are not doing it in which case you are insta-fired. If you are doing your job and doing it well, you won't hear anything, which means, "good job." Very little positive feedback of any type.
Went 8 months working a weekend graveyard shift meeting my supervisor twice (during mandatory training), and the Security Director once, again, during a mandatory meeting. People on the M-F 7-5 shifts have regular meetings and interaction with management and tend to get the cherry assignments. If you work swing, graveyard or weekend, you are destined to stay there unless you go out of your way to make yourself noticed in some way.
You are forbidden to be anywhere near your post when not working, which makes it difficult to go see your supervisor if you are on a non-regular week day shift.
Some supervisors treat regular officers poorly.
Supervisors usually have little or NO experience managing people or resources, so expect to manage your manager if you have even the slightest clue about anything.
Work can be very tedious and boring. Expect long hours standing with a few breaks.
Personal items such as radios, Ipods, books, newspapers, etc., are not allowed when on post. even on graveyard or swing. So it is very easy to get bored quickly. Several people on the graveyard fall asleep and are fired.
Securitas has people that actually go around to each location to try and catch people sleeping, sitting when they should be standing, reading, listening to music, etc. If they catch you, you will be fired. There is very little trust in the organization but honestly, I see why they have these people, guards will try to get away with as much as possible.
Security Directors are usually top notch although at some locations they can be very young and lack experience in managing people.
    Benefits are really poor.
Some of your co-workers are not known for taking showers or grooming themselves. Be prepared to work with people with slightly lower IQ's then most people. I find myself the resident go to person for questions that anyone should know working security or just breathing. Even if you answer the question for them, write it down and tape to the desk in front of them, without fail, you are asked the same question on a regular basis.
There is a union, but Securitas frowns on you talking to them or joining the union. From what I understand the union is a joke. Take your dues but do nothing when you need them.
Do not ever expect a raise. Pay is based on the contract. I know someone who handles the contracts for a large fortune 500 company that hired Securitas. Securitas charges this company just over $57 per guard per hour. Securitas pays that guard about $10.50 an hour. Nice profit. Even if you take into consideration training, health benefits, uniforms, and all the other overhead, this is like printing your own money.
Don't expect shift differential pay either. Most companies will pay the swing guy a bit more than the regular shift guy and then weekend guys a bit more and then graveyard a bit more and the weekend graveyard even more. Securitas pays one rate no matter when you work. Work at any other security company and you get pay differential.
Those free uniforms are cheaply made, fall apart and are uncomfortable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Been more proactive in communicating with employees. Pay your employees a bit more, especially those taking the shifts no one wants. Hire supervisors with actual supervisory experience, not just security experience. Train supervisors better in managing people.
