Select Comfort – “Decent pay and somewhat rewarding work for a dead end job.”
Pros
1. The Money (2007 & 2008 I averaged well above $60000/year)
2. Helping people improve their lives (really, the beds are that good)
3. A easy job
Cons
1. Management above Store Managers: they believe they are better and know more than the Store Managers and Sales people, although almost all of them never have worked the floor more then a day or two or for a few minutes.
2. Hiring from outside the company/ lack of promotions above store management: They continue to hire from the outside eventhough they have plenty of qualified candidates in their "Pipelines." Each time they have hired someone from the outside the company has gone futher down hill. i.e. District Managers, Regional Vice Presidents, and VP of Sales
3. Not every district is treated equal: There are rules that no one can find in the Employee Manual. Some District Managers make up some very screwy rules, creating liabilty for Select Comfort.
4. Monthly Budgets: most often created by uneducated people using no proven scientific method of forcasting and assigning stores their budgets.
5. HR: HR isn't there to be nuetral or support store level employees, but to simply take the side of upper management, even if they are in the wrong.
Advice to Senior Management
Upper management needs to hold everyone accountable the same way. They need to accept that there are factors outside the stores that cannont be overcome and blindly holding people accountable is going to cost the company plenty of great employees.
Stop hiring from outside the company. District Managers are unskilled in this company and glorified cheerleaders. People are hired in a at the Peter Principle and this needs to change. The company needs to either use a scientifically proven method for forecasting and/or accept that stores won't hit their budgets every month.
