Pros

Good work/life balance; decent benefits

Cons

extremely political; lack of professionalism; arbitrary decisions and rules; lack of staff support; lack of interdepartmental planning and coordination; commutes can be very long to various reservations; tribal members can be very nasty and vindictive; lots of turnover - people just appear and disappear without notice all the time; atmosphere of fear due to uncertainty. Tribe can be deliberately deceptive to job applicants about the nature and duration of employment. There is a much higher potential risk to professional reputation by working for the tribe.

    Pros

    Great work/life balance. Virtually no overtime or nights/weekends required.
    Starting salary was pretty high for the position.
    Depending on the department you work in, little oversight means you can get away with murder.

    Cons

    High turnover, people fired for no reason, esp. after a new election
    No raises, not even a cost of living adjustment, in years.
    Nepotism. Jobs open for tribal members only, even if they are not qualified. Tribal members allowed to do things at work that other employees are not.
    Terrible (and expensive) benefits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    It seems the tribe is making money hand over fist, yet none of that is trickling down to the employees. People have gone years without a raise, cost of benefits have gone up. I have known people to get fired if a tribal member didn't like them, even though they were excellent employees. Communication is sorely lacking.

    Great, until they started a pay freeze 3 yrs ago and increase out of pocket benefit costs each year.

    Pros

    work/life balance cannot be beat

    Cons

    pay freeze initiated 3 yrs ago, not due to economy, but due to fiscal irresponsibility. In addition to pay freeze, 401k matching % decreased and the so / so health benefits got worse the past two years due to increase in out of pocket costs. Very important to leaders that employees don't get raises if casino revenue doesn't continue to grow, though growth may well have peaked a couple years ago. Compensation dept is asleep at the wheel.
