  1. Great job for EMTs, recently discharged military medics and corpsmen, and nursing students.

    Pros

They work with your schedule to an extent for school. The leadership has daily huddles to pass info and receive feedback from employees. New staffing angel online system is working well. Leadership does have an open door policy.

    Cons

Favoritism can be bad, and I've seen some nurses leave because of it. Some habitually late employees still have jobs. When your coworkers have a problem with you, they tell everyone else except you, and then it shows up on your annual evaluation. Turnover rate for Clin II nurses is high so there are voids in management. A few charge nurses allow their friends to loiter, and smoke outside while others are told to work.

    Advice to Management

Put into place a conflict resolution system for employees. Make it part of the work culture where employees meet face to face over problems instead of gossiping and complaining about each other to other employees. Show enthusiasm and empathy for everyone at work. Have charge nurses set the example, and do not be part of the gossip. Apply the rules to everyone equally and do not play favorites.

I've been with Sentara for seven years. Overall, it's a great place to work.

    Pros

The benefits are fantastic. Excellent vacation and bonus programs. Senior leadership is very approachable. Innovation and hard work are recognized throughout the organization. Sentara has never laid off employees due to economic changes.

    Cons

Depending on the department, opportunities for advancement are somewhat limited. When things don't go right, senior leadership tends to react in a manner that doesn't efficiently address the problems, opting instead on having unproductive meetings and conference calls.

    Advice to Management

Let the experts you have working for you do what they do best instead of micromanaging them.
