    Pros

There are some nice people working here, as you would find anywhere. There is an opportunity to be of service to people at a difficult time in their families' life. Health insurance plans are good.

    Cons

There is so much tension all the time, as sales are never good enough. When they celebrate quarterly, even if sales were good, the food served at dinner is awful, likely because they didn't spend enough. Real achievement is rewarded with a certificate and a handshake, no real recognition.

Lousy management, lousy compensation (minimum wage until your sales exceed quotas), high expectation of working long hours make this a tough place to work. There is always unhealthy tension in the workplace, which is then turned by the rank and file on one another. Little respect is shown to staff in practices and procedures. Threats and intimidation are standard practice. It's difficult enough to sell something most people don't even want to talk about, but if you come with experience and maturity, you'll be disappointed in how little the management cares to hear your ideas. This company has the most outdated, non-intuitive, difficult to use data system. Promotion, should you be foolish enough to seek it, means endless meetings, pressure to intimidate staff and working nearly every day.

The reality doesn't match the company's rhetoric. For all the talk about dignity and memorializing the deceased, there is really very minimal effort put into guiding the families in how to adequately memorialize their loved one in a way that actualizes his/her values, faith, convictions about life and death. Maybe some locations do this better than what I witnessed at two locations, but there's no incentive for funeral directors, apart from their own professional pride (which gets dulled over a period of time by the way the company treats them), to put forth the effort to make it happen. Families go away feeling like the services were fine because they don't know any better.

    Advice to Management

Reduce your turnover by listening to your people. You hired them for their skills, experience and professionalism; don't waste the talent. Pay them better.
