I have been working at Shoppers Drug Mart

    Pros

-The purchase discount program is very good (not as great as it once was, but still pretty nice)
    -Group camaraderie is usually good
-Gratis is usually done quarterly or semi-annually and is reasonable
-Opportunity to train one-on-one with your manager or other colleagues to develop selling skills
-Lots of time to play with makeup and skincare to your liking
-Vendor training program is great (when you can go)
-Pay is decent for the industry
    -Individuality is encouraged
-If you are passionate and can foresee being a manager, there is AMPLE opportunity to go through the company's corporate training

    Cons

-You need to work in the department for years before you can really start seeing a decent salary
-The commission structure is terrible; it is based on the wholesale cost, rather than the retail cost, and is based on a "percentage" system of how many hours you've worked in the commission period. In other counters I'd worked for in the past, you knew that 5% of the retail cost of a product was going into your pay. At Shoppers, it might be 3%off the wholesale cost, and with that some gets put to the manager and some goes to the other people that work in the department. You have to work a LOT harder to make your commission that at department store counters.
-Sales goals can be a little dramatic
-Constant galas for no reason at all, money comes before anything else for Shoppers (as with any retail establishment), over the years it has become frustrating the extent what Shoppers will do to get customers to spend their money
-With cosmetics being a "store within a store" concept, you are somewhat separate from the other employees, they don't have the same service standards that we do in cosmetics, don't get the gratis that we do, and are often high school students or university students that have no intention of staying with the company, so there is turnover and not as easy to maintain relationships as people can come and go from the staff

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize your talent. There are people working for this company that have more ambition and passion for the cosmetics industry than you ever dream of. There is so much opportunity that we strive for in the corporate side of things, but there is no guidance. Sometimes the stinginess of the company is infuriating. Show us some support. Show the really serious beauty experts and managers that you care for us, show it in the salary, and tell us of the opportunities afforded to us.
