I have been working at Siemens

Pros

Siemens is a huge company and therefore provides almost unlimited opportunities for career development and for promotion / advancement.

Cons

While there are huge opportunities for advancement due to the sheer size of the company, obtaining some of the opportunities requires a LOT of effort and willingness to put in huge amounts of hours to get noticed by someone at or above a certain level. While the top and top- middle management, and especially HR, certainly espouse the merit based pay system, continuous feedback, performance process, and high performance culture, the reality is that the day to day line managers aren't getting the message, and often recognize seniority and experience over performance, talent, and potential.

    Pros

The time off policy was decent and work from home arrangements are negotiable. The benefits has a great support structure and the ability to travel around the world was interesting and fun.

    Cons

It's big. There are a lot of issues that arise in America because of the German work culture and the differences between the two. There are little opportunities for promotions unless you are a white German male. There were very few women managers and the one that I did see was German. The politics within the company are complex and suffocating.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start to understand more of what your middle management is doing and stop focusing so much on the revenue.

    I worked at Siemens

    Pros

Good benefits, Decent salary if you negotiate it coming in, but forget about getting a decent annual raise. the top performers get less than the inflation rate. You are treated as an adult when it comes to your schedule, very flexible.

    Cons

    -Cult of personality culture.
-Performance metrics are based on completely arbitrary factors, to the point where people worry more about the metrics, and less about whether or not they are actually doing a good job.
-Sales force rules the roost. Internal politics always manages to derail needed changes.
-Management completely out of touch with what occurs in the field.
-Work lots of weekends and nights with no compensation.
-From a project management standpoint it is known as a "weak matrix" organization, all power resides with funtional managers.
-New York City is only fully "Unionized " area for the company, union employees operate with complete impunity.
-No consideration for geography in salary bands, except San Francisco, they get a cost of living bump NYC does not.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a hard look at the Middle management, especially those that have been there forever, they are not doing you any favors. Also, stop coming up with new slogans every year and actually live by them. The last big push was about becoming a "customer-centric" organization. It was a lot of touchy feely talk and seminars with no action to back it up. Customers still a distant second to profit margin.

Stop looking at spread sheets all day and get out in the field!
