I worked at Sierra Club full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Staff is incredibly committed to the mission of the organization; fun atmosphere. All non-management staff have union representation. The organization is very strategic and effective, and in recent years has done a lot of internal work that is very progressive and focuses on building effective teams, networking and building coalitions with non-traditional allies, etc. I also have a lot of respect for the organizational culture and volunteer-led approach; the grassroots leadership of the organization is nothing short of inspirational.

Cons

The staff has a tendency to over-work themselves. The salary scale compared to some comparable organizations seemed on the low side. Sometimes the organization has internal conflicts between different levels of volunteer leadership (i.e. national vs. state/local priorities), which can lead to some interesting challenges.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Greater recognition of success with merit based bonuses and/or raises.

    Pros

Generally appropriate work-life balance and great co-workers.

    Cons

Compensation, benefits, limited upward mobility, poor retention; working to improve these areas could do the organization well to retain employees.

I worked at Sierra Club full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The people are incredible. They are motivated, smart, fun and down-to-earth. Hard work is often recognized and rewarded with more responsibility. This is a great place to work while you are young and interested in building a strong but diverse set of skills.

    Cons

Although hard work is recognized through opportunities to take on more challenging project/campaigns, it can be difficult to build a long-term career at the Sierra Club. Many of the organization's sharpest employees begin to look elsewhere in their mid-career because there are limited opportunities for upward mobility.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Regrettably, during my time at the Club I saw a number of very strong employees leave, not because they were disappointed with their work or the culture at the Club, but rather because the salaries are simply not competitive. Paying some the organization's highest performing staff five to ten thousand dollars more could go a long way in helping to retain the organization's strongest asset, human capital.
