Current Employee - Engineering Supervisor in Huntsville, AL
Current Employee - Engineering Supervisor in Huntsville, AL

I have been working at Sikorsky full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Employee Scholar Plan - Better than most tuition reimbursement plans
Higher than average starting salary
Freedom to set your own goals for Employee Evaluations
Freedom to apply to other departments by applying through the internal system

Cons

Even when the economy is good, pay raises are lacking when compared to other Corporations in the Industry.
Although Health Care Premiums are on par with Industry, the coverage is not.
Lack of a Vision Care Plan
Lack of clearly defined chain-of-command
More bosses than co-workers
Even though there are multiple US locations, there is very limited growth potential without moving to Stratford, CT
Training opportunities are severly limited for remote sites (those not located near Stratford, CT)

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ensure that the salaries stay relevant to the responsibility levels when compared to Industry and be more transparent, to front-line and middle management, in regards to this data.
Take advantage of technologies, such as video conferencing, to provide more training opportunities for employees at remote locations.

It's great for someone with a family who lives in CT.

I worked at Sikorsky full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Typically people were easygoing and friendly. I met nice folks throughout the facility. The work environment was not that stressful. I have been told that the Employee Scholar Program and stock award program has been limited lately. Sikorsky's products (Blackhawk, CH-53K, etc) are awe inspiring and the factory floor is impressive. If you're interested in working there, it's worth an interview. Trust your gut, if it's a good fit, then it's a good fit. If not, you may not stay there long term. I wish I could "buy a week" of vacation at my current job, that's a great feature. In fact, with Christmas week off you can escape CT for a whole month!

    Cons

Work schedule was 6:30-3:00 M-F through 9-5:30 M-F but no real flex time. Work was repetitive at times. IT services leave something to be desired. Not the best place for creative types.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Switch to a 9/80 work schedule. Jeff Pino knows how to give inspiring speeches. Sikorsky's products are really amazing, empower employees to be part of that amazing product design effort each and every day.

I have been working at Sikorsky full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Sikorsky has brought in substantial improvements in the facilities at the Coatesville, PA facility. Sikorsky Global Helicopters (SGH) provides a great customer delivery experience and might be one of the best commercial helicopter delivery centers in the country. The employee education program is a great benefit, even paired down to its current status with the current financial market.

    Cons

The "old school" environment of working as a team to accomplish joint goals is quickly disappearing and turning into apathy and a "whatever" mindset. When Sikorsky bought Keystone Helicopters, it was because we were a quick, cost effective and agile company. The requirement to follow all of Stratfords procedures has essentially cancelled out all of those benefits. The modest of using ACE at the plant drives almost every decision instead of just using the problem solving tools afforded by ACE to fix problems.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

First, rebuild the true team environment between those inside a department/group and between departments/groups. Once that is accomplished management should be able to give their employees a goal and direction and trust in them doing what is best to accomplish those goals. The constant infighting and bickering of "that's not my job" has to stop if the business is to succeed. Right now there are small pockets of people who want to do whats necessary to succeed but they are rarely appreciated or recognized for their Herculean efforts to get the job done right.
