Former Contractor - Project Manager in Santa Clara, CA
Former Contractor - Project Manager in Santa Clara, CA

I worked at Silicon Valley Bank as a contractor (less than a year)

Pros

The pay at SVB is competitive.

Cons

The management team in IT and the PMO are incompetent, lack management and people skills and play favoritism. The existing processes are broken but they are not open to suggestions or recommendations from employees. I’m so glad to be out of that place because the environment is toxic.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please listen to your employees when they bring their concerns in regards to poor management and work environment. The #1 reason people leave their job is due to a BAD boss!

Great people, but way too political.

I have been working at Silicon Valley Bank full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    Great, friendly, smart, motivated people.
Small enough that you can have an impact.
    Amazing benefits.
    Cool focus on startups.
    Feels like a community.
Lots of people stay for a long time.

    Cons

Clique-y with clear favorites, which has increased in the last year.
Really want you to drink the kool-aid instead of think out of the box.
Not good at process management, IT or creating a short list of clear priorities.
Executive "steering committee" has become distant and little information sharing or decision-making happens lower in the organization.
Say they don't tolerate bad behavior, but clearly do for those who are management favorites.
Not much people development in last few years.
Have fired a bunch of company veterans over the last year without explanation, which has made people really nervous.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have great people. Use them.
