Former Employee - Summer Intern

Pros

Very friendly staff. Their internship was extremely well-organised and we were given decent work by supervisors. They also organised a lot of interim seminars, departmental tours and workshops to introduce us to the firm and to break up our individual work schedules. Work hours of the senior staff their seemed decent as well.

Cons

Their strategy appears to be a heavy shift in focus on corporate, M&A work - at least, that was what Mark Dawkins stated when he addressed the interns. Whether this might lead to other departments being moved to the sidelines may be a problem for some not so intent on becoming corporate lawyers.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

A little more honesty with potential employees would be nice, even if internal propaganda is inevitable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

S&S used to be known for its great lawyers, collegiality and progressive approach to work life balance. Clients got a great service, were loyal, and followed market leading specialists. It also had a decent corporate department. Now it is known for its failed tilt at the Magic Circle and the fact that all its stars have long since left. It should have stuck to its roots rather than try to turn itself into a poor man's Clifford Chance (and what's so good about them?)

    Pros

Top end client base in the asset management divisions built on the successful hedge fund practice, but over the last 2 years has built an unprecedented client base across different asset management clients. A very good banking and insurance client base rivalling the magic circle. A level of quality, reassurance and integrity respecxted by those that come in contact with the firm. Market profile is bigger than revenues suggest, a collecgiate culture that fosters a friendly environment and good work life balance. Leadership and business development plans now coming to fruition.Based on a meritocracy - if you do a job well, you get recognised.

    Cons

Can be siloed (there again what law firm isn't), can think about own department too much and not what is right for everyone. Can over plan and not think about implementation and delivery, can have the wrong people doing the wrong job..too many people in HR
