Two words: Poor Leadership

I worked at Skilled Healthcare Group full-time

Pros

A job that pays over minimum wage is about the only good to come out of this company. I bet you if they could find a way to outsource it though they would.

Cons

The leadership (lack there of) in this company is awful. Executives have no idea what they are doing and have lost touch wil reality. They make bad decisions and bark at anyone who questions them. They change employees around constantly to different departments so nobody has any in-depth knowledge of their role. Employees at their 'corporate' (wait, they correct you to Administrative Support Services) office make mistakes but can't fix them a) for reporint the mistake with a fear of losing their job and b) because they are so micro-managed nobody has the authority to fix a problem in a system. Other commenters are spot-on about the wage freeze BS and insurance premiums.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lay off the entire C-level (except Dev) and start from scratch. That might actually make a difference.

    Pros

Easy work for a halfway decent salary. The place is run so poorly that you can be a complete idiot, and still make it there, as long as you are willing to kiss up to the right people.

    Cons

Extreme favoritism displayed by management. Bullying starts at the Executive Management level, and works its way down. Learn to kiss butt, or spend your life getting pushed around. Executive Management will execute things like pay freezes to the worker bees and suspensions on 401k matches, but they don't think twice about spending $1 million on frivolous things such as retreats that are specifically for those with corner offices. Management refuses to spread the wealth to its employees, and the lower your status on the totem pole, the less you are cared about. A good example of this would be that those with the lowest salaries pay exorbitant amounts for their insurance coverage, while those within management pay little or nothing for theirs. In addition, nobody bothers to train anyone and managers spend more time spreading malicious gossip about their least favorite subordinates than they spend actually doing anything productive. Knowledge hoarding is also rampant. Trust no one.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a good, hard look at what is not working within the company, and why. Respect those employees who want to do good for the company, and weed out those who are poisonous. Quit wasting money on frivolous things, and instead invest in a good, solid management team. Show employees you actually care by contributing more towards the cost of insurance, etc. Create an environment of respect instead of intimidation.

You can't judge a book by its cover. The cover looks fantastic but the story is terrible.

I have been working at Skilled Healthcare Group

    Pros

Team members work well together. An alliance is almost formed instantly as management gangs up on the lower wage earning employees. If you learn to suck up to management and the management assistants, you will definitely get a raise even during a pay raise freeze.

    Cons

Benefits are terrible. The insurance company used receives tax exemptions yet charges their insurance holders more money. The pay rate increases are 75% less than the average inflation rate. No management skills whatsoever in the whole company. Employees are not trained on how to do their job but are thrown in to "figure it out".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Top management needs to manage their team better. Managers are out of control with fraternizing with subordinates, and showing obvious favoritism. When the economy is struggling, especially for a company that depends on the government for money, they should really pay attention to how their employees are paid doing their job. A lot of "busy work" and unnecessary jobs due to lack of communication and follow-through.
