I have been working at Sleep Train Mattress Centers full-time for more than 8 years

Pros

The founder of the company seems like a sincere person.

Cons

Every negative review of this company on this site is completely accurate in my experience having worked for Sleep Train for about 10 years. If you have some self respect and think you deserve to be treated well, do not work here.

The company is full of nepotism and favoritism. Brothers, sisters, cousins, husbands, wives, girlfriends and boyfriends. If you have a certain last name you can do whatever you want, get promoted very quickly and easily whether you are qualified for a job or not, and get away with anything, even if you are not good at your job. If you are not one of the clique or part of certain families, you are subject to constant "coaching" about what you are doing wrong, no matter how good you are. Intimidation and micromanagement rule the day.

Regional-level and down management rely on and engage in gossip and hearsay and never admit to any wrongdoing. They only cover up and protect each other and their buddies. This is hardly professional if you are concerned in any way about the people who trust you to make fair decisions. If you are not part of the clique or don't care to suck up to make them feel important, you are not treated well.

It seems impossible to me that the founders of this company think they have developed a really great culture and a great place to work. The real culture is one of management by fear and intimidation unless you are part of the clique. Then the culture is party, drink and do drugs with your buddies and cover up for them if they screw up. No, this is not a good culture, it is lying and exaggerating to the top bosses while you treat the rest of the people like dirt.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a way to get the television show Undercover Boss to do a segment about Sleep Train where Dale Carlsen goes under cover to see what really happens in the trenches of his company.
