I have been working at Smith's Food & Drug full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

The pay is great if you know the right people and strings to pull. Discounts on Ford, Apple, HP, Dell, and Lenovo products as well as some phone plans. Involved in community and donates to Primary Children's Hospital.

Cons

Starting pay isn't pleasant. Management gets worse the hirer you go. Greedy and sells out to any third party to save a buck. Gotten really conservative in the past 5 years(e.g. Hiring limitations on tattoos, gauged ears, and hair style/color). Employee discount is only 10% off Kroger brands and nonfoods at Marketplace locations.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start caring about your employees and customers again instead of aiming for 'Highly Satisfied' scores. Secret shoppers and telephone surveys provided more accurate and positive feedback than your online survey built for complaints.

    Pros

Pay and benefits aren't bad and they offer a decent amount of vacation time to those who stay with the company a while.

    Cons

    - Hours are a major issue with every store I've been at, they run really tight crews to maximize store profits and manager bonuses.
    - Vacations are tough to get approved because of the lack of back-up in each department.
    - "Who you know" is big here, I've seen way too many people put in positions that they're far from ready for just because they're buddies with the director or with corporate.
    - Overall quality around the store has gone downhill since rolling out the new lower price project. They seem to be taking the Wal-Mart route.
    - "Treating employees with respect" is to give us a free meal a few times a year or sometimes let us wear a t-shirt instead of the button up, it's truly insulting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need to end these pointless "moral boosters" and treat people like adults.

I have been working at Smith's Food & Drug full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

This store likes hard workers, and values creative thinking. If you come in with the mindset of doing a good job, you'll be treated well. If you are just trying to pass the time and collect a paycheck, it will take a long time to make a decent wage. The best grocery store to work for in the area. The staff is mostly really positive, and make it a great place to work.

    Cons

The department managers have been with the store for over 30 years, making it really hard to progress in the company. Every year they talk about how maybe they'll retire next year. Kroger has a great program to progress motivated people up the management chain, but you have to either have a bachelor's degree or a year as a department head to be considered. None of the current department heads have any interest in moving up further, thus have created quite the bottleneck.
