I have been working at Sno-Isle Libraries part-time (less than an year)

Pros

Management is very open to questions and discussions about the job and company policies. Lots of opportunities for improvement through company-provided trainings and seminars.

Cons

As a substitute, no benefits or guaranteed hours are available. All other staff receive exceptional benefits packages.

    I have been working at Sno-Isle Libraries

    Pros

    You do get benefits if you're part time at 20 hours a week. If you have no career aspirations are content with occasional lateral moves within the organization, I’d recommend it as a nice job if you like working in customer service. It’s a relatively safe work environment. Job security is great.

    Cons

    Little to no room for advancement or growth despite any extra effort you put into your work or into expanding your knowledge base about the organization and the services it provides. Even though current managers & the Director were librarians who were able to work their way up through the ranks, those same women now seem to have instituted a standard of not promoting current employees if they can at all help it. Outside candidates are usually, if not always, chosen for the higher-paying jobs, indicating a sentiment that current employees simply aren't qualified to those same openings, despite their Sno-Isle experience.

    On their employment home page Sno-Isle claims to provide "...continuing opportunities for training and development, so you can explore a career that will be vital and interesting for years to come." This doesn’t appear true as I can say that I’ve rarely, if ever, seen it practiced: see above comment.

    Job security is great: no matter how poorly someone may perform their job, they won't be fired; the poor performance will just be ignored, or they’ll be moved to another position.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Senior management people are purposefully separate from and out-of-touch with employees in the branches and are way too comfortable in their jobs, simply because there’s no accountability or methods for measuring work product. Start holding managers and directors accountable for their lack of management skills (there are some good managers, but there are also some real duds) and find a way to make them show they’re really working 40 hours a week.

    All areas of leadership need a serious routing to allow those truly in touch with the public and those with fresh ideas to lead the library. And most of all, please open your eyes and recognize the talent right under your noses. Hire from within: you have some amazingly talented and innovative people working here, so why the fanatical obsession with looking outside? Outside people aren’t magical; they’re just someone else’s employees.
