-A chance to really learn about the products Sonoco manufactures
-Great community to work within

Advice to Management

The best part of Sonoco was how open the management staff was with fellow Sonoco employees. Each manager I encountered was very kind and helpful, while more than willing to explain terms or fundamentals that you do not quite understand. I feel this is a huge asset to the company and managers should continue this process; it makes employees feel like they are not alone.

    Pros

People, benefits and overall work environment is promising. overall job is enjoyable and easily manageable to fit into life. Pay is good.

    Cons

Personal growth is challenging due to blue collar entrenchment of many leaders -- this needs to be corrected. Holiday pay for those working alternate schedules is non-existent -- getting a holiday off means you make it up another day.

    Advice to Management

look at long-term growth of all staff, better balance blue collar/white collar environments. No tolerance for harassment of any sort.

  2. Potential to be great company but underwhelming critical thinking at leadership level

    Pros

Competitive pay and benefits package. Very solid company in terms of financially viability and job security if you want to be a lifer. Strong cash flows from legacy businesses to fund new growth so has the capability to be truly global player. Pockets of talented and hard working people at the lower - mid management level.

    Cons

Home grown Hartsville upper leadership with limited thinking, risk averse culture, slow to move or recognize new possibilities outside their core. Ranks high on diversity and sustainability metrics but upon closer look, this is mostly box checking with little meaningful actions. Consumer packaging businesses still acting independently, no formal mechanism for cross divisional learning and sharing to grow large accounts.

    Advice to Management

Be creative in thinking about people's growth, find solutions or stretch assignments for those needing growth. Do a 360 review on the senior leaders to get a good hard look of what people really think. Get training on how to do feedback to help your people grow.
