Pros

They have very interesting work, nice colleagues, good environment. I really appreciate the exp. The pay is also good, better than avg.

Cons

Sometimes the job and the whole environment are not very enthusiastic. But anyway, this is difficult to solve. Still good.

Fun work, but management only cares about a few friends, ignores most others

    Pros

well known and respected brand, interesting technology, no crunch time, relaxed atmosphere. Get to travel and meet lots of game developers. Can build an external network of connections. Visit trade shows and conferences.

    Cons

Management ignores most employees except for the happy few, no career path. some colleagues are 'lifers' with lack of motivation, almost sleeping in their cubicle.

    Advice to Management

Walk around more, chat with your staff, encourage collaborations more actively

SCEA "Research and Development" is not a research organization

    Pros

The PlayStation is always fun to work on, even if the SDK is horribly broken. It is fun to get to know in advance about future developments in the PlayStation. Sometimes you get to implement research that has been performed by others, e.g. SIGGRAPH papers, but not often.

    Cons

This is not a PhD level research environment despite the "R&D" designation. The leadership are nice people but they do not have academic research experience. Conference attendance is limited, you are discouraged from spending time reading research publications, and generating publications is rare and is not encouraged. Most staff do not have PhDs and do not have research publication experience. Most of the projects are development projects and do not push fundamental state of the art. If you want an environment like e.g. Microsoft research you will be sorely disappointed. Decisions come from the top on down and are often frustrating and illogical.

    Advice to Management

What can you do? This is the way Sony wants it. Don't hire people with a PhD research background, they will be bored.
