I worked at Souder Miller & Associates full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The young professional engineers were the brightest that I had ever worked with in regard to technical, project and client management. As a group, they were dedicated to quality project deliverables..

    Cons

There was a lack of corporate identity and purpose. Individual offices often operated as distinct businesses without regard to corporate direction.

  2.

Great place to work, but hard to grow

    Pros

SMA prides itself on a relaxed work environment. It has a motto of "get your work done and have fun doing it" is an amazing mantra that other design firms would dream of having. The bureaucracy is fairly non-existant and getting tasks accomplished is typically backed up by management. Decision making is almost entirely left in your hands, which can be a double-edged sword. The projects this design firm works on allows for entry-level project managers and engineers to pick up small projects from birth and carry it all the way to the grave.

The benefits package is good, but not great. There is better out there but HR is always seeking to improve it when budget allows.

Each branch office operates practically independently, and the environment also changes from office to office. All in all, if you want a relaxed but yet productive work environment, come to SMA.

    Cons

The firm is small and is quite top heavy as it sits. Growth past mid-level is pretty difficult if outright impossible. There have been cuts to personnel as a result of the economy.
