Pros

Enjoyable and flexible work environment. I was fond of my colleagues, and more so the professor who employed me. I would recommend this opportunity to anyone who gets the chance.

Cons

The politics of academia. Though I had to deal with them very little as a lab assistant, they were still visible from where I stood.

I worked at South Dakota State part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Being a learning assistant was beneficial because it felt good helping students with their home work. It was also nice to have a review of past course work while tutoring.

    Cons

The biggest con was that it was boring at times. Since most classes are on computers, most students could be help from the online tutorial.

  2. Good place to start, but no growth opportunities

    Pros

The biggest pro is enjoying my coworkers. Also, the University was more stable during times of low economy than many businesses; I was hired during the recession. SDSU is a good place to start, or for those looking to stay in the same position. If looking for growth and opportunities, look elsewhere.

    Cons

The politics within management is obvious and frustrating for those it affects. Very little support for professional growth and development.

    Advice to Management

Out with the old, in with the new. Hire the most qualified, competant individuals, rather than hiring for political reasons.
