I have been working at Southwest Airlines full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Everything you hear about Southwest is true. The people are VERY friendly, the attitudes are amazing and the benefits are better than most companies.

Cons

In the Technology department there is a true lack of leadership. Everything is project focused with no vision for actually building software products that last. Teams are torn down and then rebuilt for each project.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Southwest Technology needs to hire real leaders that understand team building, process and vision. Stop asking your leaders to act like project managers and have your leaders lead...

    Culture, Communication, Opportunities, Benefits, Pay are just starters. They also provide many opportunities to better yourself with their university 4 people.

    I worked at Southwest Airlines full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    - Casual Dress
    - Friendly environment, most people are really great people
    - Values driven company
    - Great product you can believe in
    - People have good-will in most situations
    - The Technology contributors know how to dig deep and get things done.

    Cons

    - Slow to make decisions
    - When decisions are made, there's a rush to action
    - Weak employees (including Leaders) linger, difficult to manage out
    - Challenging to develop from within
    - A lot of hurry up and wait
    - Technology department is positioned to overpromise consistently

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Technology Department Specific -Communicate more often with your teams, tie the work to the values/sustainability of the company to give the work more meaning, promote from within, see that delivery leaders, technical leaders and people leaders can be mutually exclusive ... be mindful that putting the right leader in the wrong role can cause major problems.
