If you're average, you'll do well. If you're exceptional, you'll look elsewhere

Senior Planner (Current Employee)
Dallas, TX

ProsStable employment and you will never worry about being laid off or fired (yes, they will do everything to avoid filling out termination paperwork). Looks great on a resume and will get you in a lot of doors when you look elsewhere. You can gain experience and knowledge quickly if you have the drive and desire to better yourself from day one. Very friendly coworkers. Fun office environment and always relaxed. Casual dress code every day. Flight benefits are great if you're the kind of person who loves to travel with no guarantees.

ConsSouthwest likes to promote average employees from within instead of exceptional talent from outside, which is killing the company. Several people become silo'd in their jobs. No emphasis is placed on education and breadth of experience, rather it is based on longevity with the company. Slow career progression and extremely low pay compared to the industry average for certain skill sets. If you only want flight benefits for casual trips, look elsewhere and earn more to be able to buy a guaranteed ticket.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagers, Directors and VPs need to realize that there are several very talented employees that could easily go elsewhere. Promote those that deserve it and give out raises to those willing to take on more work instead of hiring more dead weight and not addressing the core issue of underperforming employees who should be shown the door. Look at the industry and realize every other airline is gunning for you and you have too much holding you back with underperforming employees.

I worked at Southwest Airlines full-time for less than a year

Pros: Decent and inexpensive benefits (medical, health and free flights -- standby!),… Cons: Very low starting wage. Be careful of the union not protecting you for the first 7 or so months of your job. In… Advice to Senior Management: Modernize your systems, especially the webste so that your site doesn't go down during EVERY sale. It's time… No, I would not recommend this company to a friend More
