    Pros

SSL designs robotic spacecraft that gets blasted into space by massive rockets, and the task is challenging and interesting. There is a lot of room for improvement, so you can be a part of that.

    Cons

My department manager has been at the company his whole career and he is is missing modern management skills. Other section managers are in there position because they were the only soles left during after the company went bankrupt. My experience is that quality is suffering and I wonder how SSL claims ISO 9001 compliance. Some departments don't do anything and work easy 35 hour weeks, while other departments work 55 hour weeks with no compensation or even a pat on the back. There is a lack of team work and some people will just ignore there job. The books are often cooked because that is how they always do it. Technical risks are not taken seriously and on current programs the company is paying the price with poor business wining and lay-offs.

    Advice to Management

Demote the mid-managers to technical and get real managers with a divers technical management background. Focus on quality and training of employees. Rally the troops to work as a team and level workload and Identify the sandbagging departments. Focus on developing new capabilities because SSL technology is becoming non-competitive.

  2. Great work life balance, not much learning opportunity.
