I have been working at Spacelabs Healthcare full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

There are some incredibly intelligent folk that work here. The flexibility in schedule (depends on manager) has been great. In R&D there are lots of opportunities to learn and work with new technologies. They have foosball and ping pong.

Cons

A strong, legacy culture that seems completely at odds with the current mission. Disjointed middle and upper management. A lack of vision with some management in particular, costing the company opportunities for market growth. Really poor benefits and advancement opportunities.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work on getting fewer managers with greater skill and vision. Align all divisions with a clear goal and direction. Work on hiring quality over quantity. Be more Apple than IBM.

    Bottom line earnings are more important than employees

    Pros

    Spacelabs Healthcare grows, in part, by buying other companies. Frequent changes create new opportunities. This company is international with operations in USA, China, UK, and India. Major suppliers are in USA, UK, China, and Indonesia. There are many opportunities to work with people in these other countries and learn.

    Cons

    Top management demands constantly improved earnings. This means that production of parts must move to low cost countries. Thus, quality issues require constant attention and major work. The drive for constantly improved earnings also drives jobs to low cost countries. This means that jobs for R&D Engineers, Operations Engineers, Production Associates, and others decrease in the USA and increase in China and India. That means many small reductions in the work-force in the USA.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Deepak Chopra drives Spacelabs Healthcare by threats, yelling, and fear. (He would argue that he simply does not accept poor performance.) The performance of top managers is negatively impacted by this environment. The quality of products being developed in China is far below the quality of previous products. Depak should change to encourage top managers to focus on quality, innovation, and the employee well being.

    Pros

    One can definitely keep work-life balance;
    Salaries are average;

    Cons

    The place is too quiet and old-fashioned, although there is some new blood. Still old blood prevails.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Hire real leaders and don't promote old-timers to leadership positions. They don't necessarily qualify for the job.
