It was rewarding to be serving patients in need at the front desk, but some coworkers saw it as just another 9-5

I worked at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Therapists and physicians in the ambulatory clinics are very pleasant to work with. Adequate training for use of scheduling and registration software. Beautiful new building since April 2013.

    Cons

Some of my peers were inconsiderate and/or deliberately not helpful to patients, which was frustrating to see especially considering the patients have disabilities for which they are coming to Spaulding to get help.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More cohesive team atmosphere, maybe via encouragement of more two-way communication

Current Employee - Staff Nurse in Cambridge, MA

I have been working at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

-Incredible experience. Patient acuity is high and you see patients with a wide variety of conditions. --Nurses are allowed to do procedures that are done by MDs elsewhere, such as wound vac's, complicated dressings, peritoneal dialysis, etc.
-Willingness and proven history of hiring and training new grads.

    Cons

-Low pay. 1-2% merit raises per year, no yearly bonuses.
-Inability to retain good employees. High turnover rate.
-Unsafe staffing ratios despite persistent complaints from staff.
    -High acuity with insufficient resources.
-Medical equipment are old and always broken. Basic things like vital sign machines are not guaranteed to be available when needed.
-One physician covers the entire hospital overnight.
-Unrealistic expectations from management for RNs. They seem to be out of touch with the work load of RNs and with bedside nursing. They expect the work quality of a 1:3 staffing ratio but then implements a ratio of 1:5-8.
-Alarms from monitors and equipment on the unit are out of control. Patients and staff alike are annoyed by all the distracting noises, but MDs and management are unwilling to do anything about it for liability reasons. It doesn't make sense to give medication for insomnia and then have crazy alarms ringing throughout the night.
-It bears repeating: terrible staffing ratios.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Pay your staff more. Compared to a med/surg floor, RNs do much more work for much less pay.
-Update your medical equipment such as vital sign machines, COWs, med scanners, etc.
-24hr pharmacy - getting medication orders through and medications to the patients are a huge time-sucker without a pharmacy.
    -Extended hours for the lab.
-Upgrade medical documentation system. The one currently used is embarrassingly outdated. It has the pixel resolution and the functionality of Pong.
