Pros

Working with Great people and working for a great cause. The environment is wonderful and welcoming and a postive atmosphere

Cons

At times it is frustrating because it is a non profit organization, and it is hard to get funding or raise enough money.

    Pros

Special Olympics Illinois is a great place to work. The people here are friendly and dedicated to their job. The organization is well-run and has very focused goals that it consistently achieves year after year. It has remained financially sound during a difficult recession. You also feel proud to work here knowing that you are working for a good cause to help disadvantaged members of society to have a happier and healthier life.

    Cons

The downsides of the job are that there isn't much room for promotion or advancement as it is a rather small organization that is scattered in different areas of the state and there are only a few levels of job title. It is also hard to move up as there is so much difference in experience and education needed between the different jobs that one doesn't readily lead to another. The other downside is that resources and access are not always shared as they should be.

    Advice to Management

Advice would be to trust your employees more with access to programs and to speed up the approval process so they can get their jobs done.

    Pros

Its a great way to work for an organization that is doing something amazing in the community. Knowing that you are making a difference in the lives of those with intellectual disabilities, as well as those who support them, has been great and makes it easy to stay motivated during times when the work seems tedious. It is a small group working environment, which is nice because you form some strong relationships. There is also opportunity for work at the national and international levels through committees and working groups, along with conferences. For a sport organization, it is nice because there are 15 official sport to provide variety in projects.

    Cons

Being a not-for-profit organization and a sport organizations has its benefits, but also its drawbacks. The amount of work required by the employees outstrips the hours and effort that is put into the job. it also serves to split the attention of the staff and their projects; are we doing the right thing for sport or the right things for the athletes? Most times this is not an issue, but sometimes you have to settle, which is unsatisfying. Also, for some of the work required on the executive management side, you will be underpaid based on what you are providing. If this was for profit, you could expect to make at least 20% more.

    Advice to Management

Transparency of the process for staff structure and the financial restraints will help relieve any hard feelings of staff
