I worked at Specialized Bicycle full-time for more than a year

Pros

Potentially interesting product categories. On site food options, On site gym, road bike ride during lunch (longer lunch hour), Discounts on products.

Cons

Complete lack of direction within departments. Limited to no reviews of status within department. No clear goals or guidance for employees. A very hire and fire culture constantly trying to keep up the insane margin demands.

Conservative and limited foresight into the potential of new concepts and directions. Limited to no research done with departments making for clouded and biased decisions.

Zero growth potential.

Road bike ride during lunch hours is limiting as there is pressure to be on the ride. Without other options (even biking options such as MTB) this practice is both alienating and ridiculous as it spurs on favoritism with departments.

Morgan Hill is not actually in the Bay Area. It is very very far from both San Francisco and Santa Cruz. Although it still comes with the high cost of living, however salaries are not adjusted for it.

    Pros

Working in action sport business is cool especially bikes.
Discount on product vs. buying at retail was nice
Travel / riding in some sweet places
Cool office setting- riding/ dogs/ gym.
Ok place to work if you love bikes are just getting started, single and income is low on the list.

    Cons

Management....top leadership is really lacking/ in both Morgan Hill as well as Subsidiaries located in other countries.
They do not understand performance management or how to train and develop talent. If you meet someone at the company with good skill sets, they acquired those skills from somewhere else.
High turnover. They claim it is low but it appears they do not track it.
Clear objectives are tough to come by for performance reviews so surprise evaluations are very common.
You will likely not grow professionally.
The employee discount is what they sell to dealers at so they are making the normal 30 plus % margin. Would be nice if they provided deals to employees.
Managed and run like a little company even though they do $1b in rev. ( probably because they acquired all the larger Specialized distributors in various countries. ) The issue with that there is very little in terms of integration of all these smaller businesses. Specialized is run the business like a bunch of small companies that may or not interact depending on if there in country management agrees with the Morgan Hill Leadership. End result?…..short sighted in decision making for both people and the business in general. Poor use of resources.
Not a great place to work if you have a family. Income is not competitive for roles and geography.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It starts with the top job so not sure it will even change as long as he is there. Needs to retire. Lacking interpersonal skills and does not articulate the direction he wants the company to go in. Will cave to subsidiaries. Does not support his senior leadership. Often difficult to follow in meetings with so many contradictions.
Have a plan with objectives that all senior management agree on and execute to that. If decisions cannot be made by the group, SOMEONE at the tops needs to weigh in on a decision. Too much back and forth with individual subsidiaries and leadership. Indecision is worse than making a mistake. You cannot run a great business like that.
Hire someone that knows how to run a company and empower a leadership teams to run and manage that business. Then- get out of the way. Hold them accountable.
That new person will likely need to remove most of the of senior leadership in Morgan Hill as well as some of the key market leaders. ( tail cannot wag the dog).
Recruit/ train/ develop and retain your talent.
Be better than ok- be great.

I have been working at Specialized Bicycle full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Free bike for as long as you work there and lunch rides, plus a great social place to work.

    Cons

No job is as the job description describes, people are pushed into positions they are not competent for and then judged and fired. HR is there but does not function. Benefits are very poor. People find their own position on the career site while working in that position....very intimidating! Only people that survive are the job preservation specialists willing to throw anyone under the bus, happens all the time at SBC. Unfortunately the own is not seeing this or willing to see it.
