The talent that drove the company to success left a long time ago

    I worked at Spin Master

    Pros

If you like toys, this is the place for you.

    Cons

Upper management doesn't have a clue.

As many failed companies before them... Spin Master grew to fast, hired too many *useless* employees, and failed to recognize who is actually responsible for bringing them success.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There was a time where you didn't need 400 people to deliver a quality product. You must reevaluate your business model and fine tune operations around it. It doesn't take a genius to recognize this, just someone that actually pays attention.

Very political, back-stabbing atmosphere - uncompetitive compensation

I have been working at Spin Master

    Pros

They try to have a fun atmosphere with mixed results. You get your birthday off and some free toys at Christmas.

    Cons

Culture is out of control - I've never seen so many people who frown when you smile at them in the hallway and then sport a huge smile a second later when a senior person walks by. They're paying the price - turnover is very high - and it doesn't help that they didn't pay a bonus for 2011 (unceremoniously announced via e-mail). Compensation is also very uncompetitive. Even worse, the IT group is very short-sighted - focused mainly on bandaid solutions instead of really solving problems.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on implementing a culture of mutual respect. Make managers accountable. When you have a difficult announcement (i.e. no bonus) ensure employees learn about it face-to-face from you or their manager and not by e-mail. In fact, spend a lot more time on improving internal communications - there are professionals who can help you with that you know! When you set unrealistic growth targets - penalize the executives who set them, not the entire company. And if you can't pay a bonus - then at least be honest about the direction of the company, and maybe show your appreciation for everyone's hard work in another way. Arrogance at the company's recent town hall was on full display. Everyone is talking about the bonus cancellation - yet the CEOs said nothing about it - they instead tried to spin the departure of our CTO and another exeuctive.
