Great Entry Level company, however not much opportunity to grow.

I have been working at Spirit AeroSystems

Pros

Probably the best reason to work at Spirit as a Technical Designer is you have an opportunity to gain experience. As of 2011, they do have a "tuition reimbursement" plan if you wish to attend additional education, so that is a plus as well.

Cons

Spirit tends to push long term contracts with little/no salary increase. With the increase in Cost of Living (including insurance premium spikes) it amounts to a downward slope for income the longer you remain (Current contract proposed is set to expire 2021). With that said, it's still a great place to work if you plan to move on to other aerospace companies, or elsewhere in the engineering world.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

The direct management I work with is great. They are very knowledgeable and easy to talk with. As for senior management, they have a disconnect from the workforce. Outside the company, words seem to speak louder than actions, however the reverse can be said within the company.

No opinion of CEO

I have been working at Spirit AeroSystems

    Pros

It's a good place to gain experience, especially if you have a good manager.
They show an interest in mentoring you.
They invest very heavily in manufacturing concepts and tooling.
Chance to work on large aerospace structures

    Cons

No coherent strategy in retaining what they believe is their biggest asset and poor execution of the program management
No real opportunity to learn and grow by providing promotions and/or change positions
Managers have no incentive to acknowledge the issues or problems they have in programs
Program managers are ill -equipped to deal with or understand the complicated nature of the waterfall effect of working for the customer and meeting deadlines
Spirit is in a very precarious position where the employees each have many internal customers and external customers with competing interests

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop a coherent strategy that uses data overcome obstacles that every program faces
Remove roadblocks from innovation that include management and the performance reviews
Modify the organizational chart so employees no longer have a conflict of interest at play in trying to provide structural integrity capability
Prevent managers from moving up the company ladder by throwing their subordinates under the bus

A new company still feeling its way around the industry as a stand-alone entity.

    I worked at Spirit AeroSystems

    Pros

Good salaries for the Wichita area; interesting work and a growing sense of teamwork; excellent benefits package.

    Cons

You have a tendency to get lost in a big company like Spirit; still some of the old-school Boeing mentality exists; inconsistent management at varying levels.
