Current Employee - Store Manager in London, England (UK)

I have been working at Sports Direct full-time (more than an year)

Pros

Good standard bonus scheme - but it can be taken away for silly errors and it happens frequently
Paid worked days off

Cons

Bad basics pay
Working hours are 55pw minimum, closely monitored, publically discussed and frowned upon if not higher (despite contract being 45pw).
No direction from senior management (all quite clueless and inexperienced in managing large business)
No decision making power - all decided by 1 person (for the entire business)
No recognition programme
Bonus share scheme is bogus - to keep people in bad workplace, only qualifies after 3 years of service and must wait 2 years for payout.
No respect, swearing is common and accepted on high management level

Advice to ManagementAdvice

None - they are very intelligent people but prefer squeezing everything out of people for sporadic reward

I worked at Sports Direct full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Product in store is varied and can be interesting if you are into that sort of thing.
Salary and benefit package - but boy do you have to work for that!

    Cons

Bullied into working over your contracted hours and even then, if you dont do what the powers that be believe is 'enough', you will get phone calls and criticisms because even though you didnt need to, you hadnt worked more than 50+ hours that week.
Unfortunately as a manager you are expected in turn to treat your staff in this way also.

Negativity - the company focuses on the negative and the bad, there is NEVER any praise or even a thank you when something has gone well or you have done someone a favour, which leads staff and management to be de-motivated and lose passion for their job.

No creativity or new ideas - The company is very much a 'our way or the highway' business, and the powers that be - a majority have only ever worked for sports direct and if you are new to the company and have new ideas, you will instantly be shot down/berated/criticized for them, no matter how efficient, money making or creative they may be as they are 'not the sports direct way'. Its almost as if they are threatened by new ideas.

No work/life balance whatsoever! your life becomes sports direct and everything else will fall away as they do not see you as someone with a life, you are an employee and that is all you are.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Respect, understanding, staff and customers being no.1 priority is something this company does not do. If they did it, im sure the turnover/morale/productivity of its staff and management would not be an issue!
