Former Employee - Laboratory Technician in Tulsa, OK
Former Employee - Laboratory Technician in Tulsa, OK

I worked at St. John Health System

Pros

Reference lab work gives a laboratory technician the opportunity to see testing not normally available in smaller facilities. Several older, experienced Medical Technologists are willing to work with newer techs and share knowledge.

Cons

The work is fast paced, assembly style. It's impossible to truly give your best to each specimen and ensure quality laboratory results are released. You're expected to run non-stop from the moment you walk in until time to go home. There's no time to enjoy the work and the coworkers. People are constantly mad at each other over petty stuff. There's no communication. Training is minimal. Upper management has no concept of what being on the bench is really like. The hours are horrible. It's difficult to take any time off. Turnover is out of control. The bathrooms and break rooms are quite a distance from the work area. Promotions are non-existent. Upper management makes promises they don't keep. The atmosphere is toxic.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Staff appropriately. Adjust pay rates to match those of other laboratories in Oklahoma. Reward and recognize employees. Spend time on the bench with the techs. See what is involved. Listen to the staff. Some people are just warm bodies and need to be fired. Give the staff the tools they need to do their jobs.

I worked at St. John Health System

    Pros

Experience, people in the group are helpful with problem solving and documentation...sharepoint was helpful...people in my group were awesome. overall i got the experience i needed to get a better job that pays more and less drama between the management and the employees...

    Cons

Lay-off's thanks guys! i found something similar that pays a hell of alot more...some of the management don't have a backbone or don't do anything to earn their pay they waste their time griping out employees when they have no idea what the hell they are talking about...raises are not based on performance instead you get a letter saying you'll get a 1-3% raise so don't work extra hard you'll still get the shaft.....St Johns must really be broke to do layoffs they just made an offer to buy out OSU Medical Center!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

theres not much feedback i would give the Senior Management, they won't listen to anyone's opinions

I have been working at St. John Health System

    Pros

St John is great when it comes to getting an easy paycheck. The work is not difficult but dealing with the people looking over you sometimes can be. Your peers are good people and you will enjoy working with them. You are given a lot of paid time off and trust me you will want to use it to get away.

    Cons

St John will NOT give you a raise, promotion, or bonus. Just do your job because going above and beyond will only be rewarded with a pat on the back and a stupid piece of paper. IT support is divided and they do not tell the other branches what is going on. Desktop is constantly being micro managed and you will eventually dread what special assignment you will be given when you come into work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

pay attention to your departments, everyone on desktop hates their management so ask why, deal with problem employees instead of just slapping them on the hand sometimes people need to be fired
