I have been working at St. John Health System

Pros

The corporate climate is nice; however, some senior leaders do not hold true to the values.

Cons

The director I worked for was under qualified, and the worst supervisor I have ever worked for.

Current Employee - Registered Nurse in Tulsa, OK

I have been working at St. John Health System

    Pros

Tulsa is a great city with a reasonable cost of living and pleasant environment. Most of the equipment at saint johns has been updated recently, and many areas are newly remodeled

    Cons

Little to no loyalty to employees. Steadily decreasing Paid time Off, incentive pay, and no employee bonuses at the nursing level. Poor upper management decisions and cost cutting has led to overall poor morale, and a volatile work environment. While patients are often presented as numbers or a means to meet budget, employees are seen as Full time Equivalents to be cut and reduced prior to making higher or more strategical cost saving measures. High turnover and little core staff further stress the work environment and degrade patient care.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

From a employee point of view it appears saint john has used the current economy and threat of a dismal job market to cut employee benefits and treat employees in a way that would not have been accepted a short time ago. While these cuts provide a short term savings, the long term damage to morale takes away what i once enjoyed about working here.

Former Employee - Laboratory Technician  in  Tulsa, OK
Former Employee - Laboratory Technician in Tulsa, OK

I worked at St. John Health System

    Pros

Reference lab work gives a laboratory technician the opportunity to see testing not normally available in smaller facilities. Several older, experienced Medical Technologists are willing to work with newer techs and share knowledge.

    Cons

The work is fast paced, assembly style. It's impossible to truly give your best to each specimen and ensure quality laboratory results are released. You're expected to run non-stop from the moment you walk in until time to go home. There's no time to enjoy the work and the coworkers. People are constantly mad at each other over petty stuff. There's no communication. Training is minimal. Upper management has no concept of what being on the bench is really like. The hours are horrible. It's difficult to take any time off. Turnover is out of control. The bathrooms and break rooms are quite a distance from the work area. Promotions are non-existent. Upper management makes promises they don't keep. The atmosphere is toxic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Staff appropriately. Adjust pay rates to match those of other laboratories in Oklahoma. Reward and recognize employees. Spend time on the bench with the techs. See what is involved. Listen to the staff. Some people are just warm bodies and need to be fired. Give the staff the tools they need to do their jobs.
