I have been working at St. John Providence Health System full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    *Faith-based
*Provides treatment to all people, from the affluent to the homeless
    *Knowledgeable HR department
    *Great location - Detroit
    *Will hire people with disabilities
*Some units have cohesive staff that works together

    Cons

    *No room for advancement
    *A lot of nepotism/favoritism
*Does not recognize good employees & does not punish bad employees
    *Management out of touch
*Patient team can range from 5-9 patients at a time for RN's/7-12 for PCT's
*Staffing Department does not supply staffing
*Units are consistently inadequately staffed to save the hospital & units money because of "the budget' & patient care suffers
*High degree of employee burnout & dissatisfaction
*If an employee wishes to transfer to another department, they are written up for something minor (as you can't possibly do everything that is required of you when you work short staffed) & are refused the transfer for 6 months. This is a regular occurrence.
*Poor benefits.....must take own system benefit plan with Blue Cross as secondary, but co-pays are waaaay too high.
*Too many medical students or new residents interpreting diagnostic tests & give false reports.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have clinicians with current floor experience making decisions about how to operate & staff units; If you keep running the hospital this way, you will get sued & once you feel it in the pocketbook will you then learn to staff properly? But by then it will be too late as most of us will have moved on.

Former Employee - Physical Therapist in Macomb, MI

I worked at St. John Providence Health System

    Pros

High quality colleagues, good work/life balance, and my favorite of all my past employers. Turnover is incredibly low due to high wages and job satisfaction.

    Cons

I would say that if you are afraid of limited variety of patient issues then working in the rehab unit is more homogenous than working in the outpatient or acute care areas of P.T.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It might be a good idea to incorporate corporate cost saving incentives into bonuses as well as find ways to improve the quietness of the hospital at night (which patients always complain about in hospitals).
