I worked at St. Jude Medical full-time
Pros – Great place to learn how to deal with ineffective IT leaders.
Training programs that have bonus structures attached
Small college tuition reimbursement
Ability to learn time management skills due to overwhelming workload
Time away from family and friends due to weekend and after hours unscheduled work
Better than average health care package
Cons – I have never worked anywhere with so much potential, yet so little aspiration to greatness. Mediocre is AOK for this organization's IT department. Staffing levels are so low that weekend, holiday,and after hours work is mandatory.
Flex time / remote work? Forget about it - you are expected to be at your desk from 7-6, and available at your cell phone's first ring while at home. Taking a shower and get that call? Somewhere with poor cell coverage? Be prepared to be put on a performance improvement plan for not picking up immediately when your manager calls.
This job was the worst in my career. I have never seen such ineffective leaders, with absolutely no idea how an IT business is run in a professional organization. Cannot recommend this company.
Advice to Senior Management – For Director and higher leaders - go back to school and get a MS/MA in Business Management. Focus on soft skills (leadership in particular), and be sure to pay attention to the Finance and IT courses.
Next, spend some time learning the basics of the IT technologies that you are responsible for.
Finally, remember - when you are talking you are not listening.
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
